TRADE WINDS: Guangzhou’s African Community
Since 2000, China-Africa bilateral trade has been increasing by 35 % each year. The Chinese presence in Africa has been well-documented, but little is known of the tens of thousands of Africans who now live in China, many earning a living trading with their home continent. They are the focus of this photobook, shot in and around Guangzhou’s “Africatown” during October and November 2008 as part of my MA final project. The documentary has already been published as a photo-essay in the Guangzhou-based newspaper Southern Metropolis Daily, and used editorially in Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post, but is still available for publishing in other markets, either as the entire book, in part, or as individual photos. Email me to discuss more.
